The Thin Green Line Project

The TGL Team have been working on a project which will aim to examine at how love moves in different formats all over Cyprus through the buffer zone. In case you think you can help with this project through your experiences, please email us at info@acceptcy.org and we will try to get you in contact with TGL Team. This is what the TGL team says:

Our project idea is about making a film regarding mobility across Cyprus’s buffer zone in the form of romantic or sexual relationships. The TGL project aims to produce personal historiographies of mobility across a dividing line, which is not only marked by the reality of a war, but also by ideological difference produced by institutions, such as religion, language, ethnicity, and long-established political disparities. Based on an economy of desire, the mobility that this project aspires to disclose offers an alternative space for rethinking history, sexuality, national, gender and sexual identities. At the same time, the project aims to explore underground spaces of relationality, that is ‘invisible’/hidden places where such relationships occur and which are characterized by or even producing an alternation of contradictory forms of affect: from pleasure to fear, love to hate, happiness to despair.

The film project, which will have the hybrid form of first person narration and reality documentary, will offer fragmented, non-linear personal stories, which will be narrated by faceless – but not body-less – voices, reflecting the mechanisms of memory itself, personal or collective. The final product will constitute a collage-like narration from young people, regardless their nationality, ethnicity, gender or sexuality, about their romantic involvement and/or sexual encounters with people from the ‘other side.’ This narration will be juxtaposed with an equally diverse montage of images from abandoned or promising, guarded or deserted spaces of the buffer zone as well as with archival footage of events (demonstrations, marches, collision courses, the lifting of the barricades, the establishment of the check-points) that took place within the buffer zone during the last 38 years; something which arguably constitutes a documented form of the zone’s ‘official history.’ Specifically, there will be used footage from news broadcasts and reportages, as well as from previous documentaries, regarding the Cyprus issue and the relations between the two communities. In this way, the individual stories of alternative relationality, namely, these emerging, yet still widely condemned in both sides of the zone, relationships, will be cited against the ‘official history’ of the buffer zone, offering ways to rethink the island’s political history as well as to explore possibilities of imagining a future that will not regard the buffer zone as a bloody and dividing line, but as a space of ‘trespassing’ hatred and reaching peace through love and desire.

Once the film is completed, we aim to achieve a nation-wide distribution and exhibition of the film in both sides of the island, thus targeting as wide an audience as possible, and, particularly, we aim to organize social events and discussion-Q&A evenings, which will target young people and engage them in dialogues for peace, inspired by the film. Such events will be organized with the collaboration of NGOs, such as ACCEPT (LGBT NGO), Culture in Action, and Queer Cyprus Association, with whom we have already come into contact. In addition, the film is intended to follow the international film festival circuit, especially targeting festivals in post-conflict regions or festivals with a special focus/interest in peace-building and conflict-resolution topics.
