Purple Day 20 October 2010

Dear all,
On October 20th, Spirit Day, please wear purple to bring awareness to, and put an end to intolerance in honour of the 6 boys who committed suicide in recent weeks/months due to homophobic abuse at home and in schools. Purple represents spirit on the LGBT flag and that's exactly what we would like all of you to have with you: spirit and love and respect people for who they are, no matter of their sexuality.
Recent polling conducted for Stonewall found that more than two in five primary school teachers say children in their schools experience homophobic bullying but they lack the confidence and resources to prevent and respond to it. Half of secondary teachers say the vast majority of homophobic incidents go unreported. This is maybe not surprising as half of teachers fail to respond to homophobic language when they hear it.
       The consequences
If homophobic bullying goes unchallenged, it can have severe negative consequences for young people. Seven out of ten lesbian and gay young people say homophobic bullying affects their school work and many have skipped school because of it. Homophobic bullying also impacts on young peoples' self-esteem and ambitions and Stonewall’s lesbian health survey Prescription for Change shows that lesbian and bisexual young women are more likely to self-harm and contemplate suicide.
